Dr. Peter Sallay, M.D.


Dr. Sallay is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and specializes in shoulder and knee reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery, and sports medicine. Since finishing his residency Dr. Sallay has written numerous articles dealing with a wide variety including shoulder, knee, and muscle injuries. He has written several book chapters on subjects ranging from the basic science of the knee joint to water skiing injuries. He has given many talks on an international, national, and local level to orthopedic surgeons, primary care physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and lay people. He has been invited by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons on several occasions to serve as a faculty instructor to teach advanced arthroscopic skills to other orthopedic surgeons from the U.S. and abroad. He also serves as a peer reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Sallay (pronounced like “chalet”) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and subsequently grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of Hungarian immigrant parents. He earned his B.S. in chemistry with honors from Purdue University and completed his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine in 1988. He was accepted to a five year residency in orthopaedic surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine which he completed in 1993. Subsequently Dr. Sallay completed a one year fellowship in sports medicine at Duke University in North Carolina which focused primarily on shoulder and knee evaluation/ treatment.

Dr. Sallay is currently working on several research projects mainly focused on better evaluating the outcome of various shoulder surgeries. A recent investigation focused on improving the management of post operative pain after shoulder surgery using a “pain pump”. He has recently implemented a computerized system which relies on handheld PDAs to collect patient data for more efficient and rapid care. This information will also be used for prospective studies so that more can be learned about the factors that effect the outcome of treatments.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Society for Sports Medicine, Peidmont Orthopaedic Society, Indiana Orthopaedic Society, and the Indiana Medical Association. His focus includes all shoulder surgery including: advanced arthoscopic techniques (arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, ligament tightening, labral repairs etc.), shoulder joint replacement, shoulder reconstruction. He also performs arthroscopic knee ligament reconstructions, meniscal surgeries, cartilage surgery, and kneecap realignment surgery.

Dr. Sallay is currently the orthopedic consultant and team physician for Hanover College and Cathedral High School. Dr. Sallay is the proud father of four children. He is fluent in Hungarian and he enjoys weight training, tennis, basketball, cooking, wine, art, and computers.
