Dr. Ralph Buschbacher, M.D.


Dr. Ralph Buschbacher grew up in Pennsylvania. He did his undergraduate training at the University of Virginia where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his third year, was an Echols Scholar, and graduated with a B.A. Magna Cum Laude. He stayed at the University of Virginia for medical school and was one of only two students to receive a full scholarship to this school. He moved to the Medical College of Virginia for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency training and was selected as the Chief Resident of his residency class. Dr. Buschbacher has a long-standing interest in martial arts and is an 8th Degree Black Belt in Okinawan Karate. He has won numerous Karate championships with over 80 trophies.

He currently practices mainly in musculoskeletal medicine with an emphasis on occupational medicine as well as electromyography.  He has served as an oral examiner for the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is also an examination writer for this organization. Dr. Buschbacher has published five books and is an associate editor on two others. He has written over 50 manuscripts and 25 book chapters. His main interests are in musculoskeletal medicine and electromyography, and he recently published a comprehensive manual of nerve conduction studies that is rapidly becoming the standard in the field. He is also past secretary/treasurer and past president of the Indiana Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and served six years as Newsletter Editor of the Association of Academic Physiatrists. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Association of Academic Physiatrists.

In his spare time aside from running a karate school and competing in triathlons, Dr. Buschbacher makes furniture and spends time with his wife and four sons.
